The celebration didn’t last long for San Francisco 49ers fans. Trailing the team’s first win of the season, wide receiver Marquise Goodwin informed fans that he and his wife Morgan had lost their newborn son six hours prior.
As Goodwin ran in a smooth 83-yard touchdown, he blew a kiss to the sky before collapsing to his knees in prayer while his teammates crowded around him in the end zone. The player stayed, head in hands, while some teammates got down on the ground in comfort.
Goodwin took to Instagram to thank everyone who had sent their prayers. He then added that the couple had unfortunately lost their son due to complications. The child was delivered prematurely around 4 am that morning. Goodwin added, “Although we are hurt, I am grateful for the experience and grateful that God blessed me with a wife as courageous and resilient as Morgan.”
Despite the high energy in the locker room, Goodwin found himself slipping out early to spend time with his family.
“This whole week has taken an emotional toll on my husband and I,” Morgan explained. “Despite our loss, my hubby kept grinding, scored his son a touchdown and got our first ‘W’ of the season.” Morgan describes the experience as both amazing and tragic. “But that’s okay because we won’t stop fighting and we won’t give up on what God has in store for us.”
